What is sustainable heating?

Sustainable heating is using renewable energy or low consumption energy sources to heat your building. In winter, heating costs can be expensive for your business. But by using cleaner heating options, you can save money and increase your profits.

Energy efficient heating systems

There are energy-efficient options available to upgrade your heating system. These options can replace traditional gas boilers for your business.

Heat pumps

One type of sustainable heating you could look into is heat pumps. The two main types of heat pumps you could use for your business are air source and ground source.

Air Source heat pump

An air source heat pump works by transferring outdoor air into your business through an outdoor fan. This will then convert them into heat energy which then heats the water in your heating system. You can then circulate this through your business for hot water and heating.

Air Source heat pumps are one of the lowest upfront cost heating systems you can install for your business.

Ground Source heat pump

instead of extracting heat from the air, ground source heat pumps work by extracting heat from the ground through a network of pipes underground. this system then transfers heat from under the floor to your business building to circulate it around to provide heat.

Ground source heat pumps are going to be more expensive to install than air source heat pumps, however, they do last up to 50 years and remain highly efficient.

Overall if your business did decide on a heat pump either groundosucr or airsocirce would be a great choice to sustainably heat your building.

Biomass boilers and stoves

Biomass boilers burn organic materials to transfer heat around the building. Although this is a renewable method this process still emits carbon dioxide. Biomass boilers are still a much more sustainable option compared to a normal gas boiler.

Tips to make your heating system more eco-friendly

If you are not ready to completely change your heating systems, don't worry there are things you can do to reduce your usage to make sure you are still being efficient with your heating and cooling.

Using gas boilers efficiently

Ensuring you use your boiler at the most efficient temperature could help you save energy. Your boiler can operate at a much lower temperature than they were designed for. By keeping your boiler at a lower temp you don't waste as much energy by heating everywhere up to the maximum temperature possible.

Using a smart thermostat

Using a smart thermostat can help you ensure your building always stays at the same temperature without wasting any energy this will also allow you to put your heating on a timer so you are not heating your building when you don't need to.

Insulate your building

Adding insulation to windows, walls and ceilings will prevent heat from escaping and will mean you need less heat to keep the building warm in winter.
