Learn exactly what a corporate climate pledge is and how your business could come up with its own.

Why is it important that businesses work towards climate change?

The UK joined the Paris Agreement in 2015 along with many other countries, in a pact to reach net zero by 2050. To reach net zero all sectors across the UK must be involved.

Without limiting the worst impacts of climate change businesses will not survive in the future. This is why corporate climate pledges should be there to create goals that are incorporated into your main business sustainability plan.

Another reason it is so important for companies to have a climate pledge in place is so they can take accountability. Businesses need to account for the carbon and greenhouse gasses they are emitting into the climate. With a climate pledge businesses will acknowledge this.

What should a climate pledge be?

Companies need to create a clear path towards net zero, that's why their climate pledges need to be conscience and realistic. Based on what the science-based Target initiatives say, a climate pledge needs to:

  • account for emissions in all areas of the business
  • account for the whole value chain
  • have short-term goals as well as long-term ones
  • not offset more than 5-10% of emissions

Examples of corporate climate pledges

Many businesses make strong climate pledges in many different ways, here are some examples of what top UK companies are doing.

Microsoft

Microsoft say that it will be carbon negative by 2030. They plan to do this through:

  • Driving down scope 1 and 2 emissions by using renewable energy to replace electricity usage.
  • They will reduce scope 3 emissions through an internal carbon tax.
  • They also plan to work with suppliers on new procurement processes, to account for emissions across the value chain.

Sky

Sky have said that they will become net zero through:

  • making tech products energy efficient to cover scope 3 emissions
  • making all productions net zero
  • creating a zero emissions fleet
  • carbon offsetting the emissions that they cannot currently cut.

  • Scope 3 - any emissions that your business has created but not directly, such as end-of-life of products and business travel.
